If you’re an avid dog-fanatic like me, you’ve only got to look at your Instagram feed to be bombarded with eye-catching images of stylish pups brandishing the latest canine couture.
With so many choices, settling on the perfect collar and lead for your pooch can be quite a mind-boggling experience.
Almost 15 years ago, when I first got Pops, a dog collar was a dog collar. Most of them were made from leather, or some cheaper alternative and they came in any colour way. Providing, that is, you were only after black or brown!
Fast forward to Gertie’s puppy days, and the choice is endless! Floral designs, beaded collars, velvet bowties, bold bandanas. There is something to suit the most lavish of tastes and the most generous of budgets.
What should I consider when choosing the Perfect Dog Collar and Lead?
When choosing the ideal collar and lead for your pup there is lots to consider. Some breeds, such as our pointy-nosed pals like Lurchers and Greyhounds need specialist Martingale style collars.
Other breeds like Pugs and Frenchies need to be walked on a harness so as not to restrict their breathing.
Puppies and young dogs who require training often benefit from a harness, so they can be walked on a longer lead until they have learned to walk to heel.
So, after taking into account the needs of your pup, the next factor for me is practicality and comfort. Yes, we all aspire for our canine companion to be the talk of the park, parading their latest designer doggy apparel.
But to me, practicality comes first and foremost! I want a collar and lead that will look great, but scrub up well! After all, no one wants a dirty-looking dog!

I have been so impressed with this slip lead from Luna’s Loft. I’ll be honest, I’d not used a slip lead before, but it’s turned out to be just perfect for Gertie.
Gerts can have, what many people ignorantly label ‘Small Dog Syndrome.’ She can be known to serenade other dogs when we walk past them, entirely due to fear! However, give her freedom and independence and she doesn’t make a sound.
I often joke that she is my shadow. She never strays far from my heels and walks beautifully off lead without any reactivity whatsoever. However, as we all know in certain situations leads are essential.
This slip lead provides her with the freedom to feel safe and in control. Strolling around a country garden on a Sunday afternoon with my two girls is my idea of heaven and this lead is the perfect accessory for doing just that.

Durability: Very well made and I love that the lead has a slightly springy feel. It’s also very comfy to hold and has a good grip.

Now and again we all need a dapper day! An excuse to dress up smart and ‘paw-rade!’ This tweed collar and lead set from Joules is the dog’s danglies!
People always jest that Pops has a very regal pose, so I think this suits her perfectly!
Reasonably priced, this set is perfect for a doggy afternoon tea with paw pals! It’s not something I’d dress Pops in every day as it wouldn’t stand the wear and tear [or the British weather!] But for special occasions, it’s just the job!
Practicality: Not washable
Durability: Like all Joules products, this lead and collar set is very well made. The material however means it’s only suitable on dry days!
