Windy Gap is a magical woodland cottage, nestled within 6 acres of private mixed woodland located on Ainsdale Nature Reserve. The property sleeps eight (3 twin bedrooms & 1 King-size bedroom) and has a large reception room with open fire and a large dining table in the bay overlooking the lawn and woodland. There is a large well equipped kitchen including table and chairs for 8. We welcome dogs, so there’s no need to leave your furry friend at home.
Spot red squirrels from the veranda, stroll through pine woods leading to the sand dunes and sandy beach. Enjoy a game of tennis on the private tennis court in the grounds or you have a wonderful choice of world-famous Links Golf Courses close by. The house is ideally situated for Southport and Liverpool and there is a train station in Ainsdale that can take you directly to these locations.
Please note that Windy Gap was originally a shooting lodge and is over one hundred years old; it has no insulation and because of this it would be far too expensive to try to keep the property warm during the colder months. The property is therefore unavailable for bookings from Friday 10th November 2018 and will reopen again after Easter 2019.
My daughter, sausage dog & I have just returned from an incredible week at Windy Gap. Margaret & Paul, who look after the place (and who live close by) could not have been more helpful & friendly. From the moment we booked, we could tell that they were special people who cared about their property and the people who visited it. I am an extremely particular traveller and like my holiday accommodation ‘just so’, but Windy Gap didn’t disappoint. The beds were incredibly comfy, the sheets & towels beautifully laundered (linen service is something you pay extra for), the place spotlessly clean. Windy Gap has an old world charm about it, so don’t go expecting modern furnishings – it is exactly what the photos show, a 100-year old shooting lodge.
What we found particularly fabulous was being able to walk out of the front door each day and walk the dog without having to drive anywhere, as you’re in the middle of Ainsdale Nature Reserve, with miles of pine forests & sand hills on your doorstep. I think we barely did anything else all week but pootle around the Nature Reserve, spotting rabbits, red squirrels, foxes, natterjack toads & even bats!
The place is so quiet & peaceful, that we all slept for hours and felt like we’d been on holiday for months, not just a week. I can’t recommend Windy Gap highly enough – though part of me doesn’t want to recommend it as I selfishly want to keep it all for myself!!
