Rolling countryside, luxury living and dog-friendly to boot, life doesn’t get much better than this.

Tucked away in the peaceful hamlet of Henley near Langport, Collie Shepherd’s Huts offer everything you could want from a dog-friendly shepherd’s hut holiday in Somerset. Set on a working farm in the heart of the Somerset Levels, these two beautifully crafted huts combine rustic charm with all the comforts of a luxury glamping retreat. It’s the perfect countryside escape for dog owners looking to relax, recharge, and explore.

Owned and lovingly run by Chloe and Kevin, these pet-friendly shepherd’s huts strike the perfect balance between laid-back rural living and stylish comfort. And with dogs not just accepted but genuinely welcomed, it’s no surprise that a holiday here is guaranteed to set tails wagging!

If you’ve followed our adventures for a while, you’ll know we’ve tried our fair share of dog-friendly getaways over the years – but this was our first shepherd’s hut experience, and I have to say, we were completely smitten from the minute we rolled up.

Rustic Charm and Subtle Luxury

Though compact and delightfully bijoux, these gorgeous little hideaways ooze rustic elegance. Imagine the charm of the countryside blended effortlessly with the comfort of a boutique retreat – considerately styled in calming, earthy tones that echo the natural beauty of their surroundings. Every detail, including the clever storage, has been carefully considered, creating a space that feels both stylish and snug.

The moment we stepped inside, we were instantly met with a sense of sophisticated cosiness. Decked out in muted Farrow & Ball tones, the interior strikes the perfect balance between rustic charm and subtle luxury. Thoughtfully chosen soft furnishings – from plump cushions and woolly throws to the prettiest bed linen – create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Tucked in the corner of the living area is a log burner that was practically begging to be lit. [I would have obliged if we weren’t basking in what’s apparently the warmest Spring since 1956!]

Waiting for me on arrival was a selection of breakfast essentials – fresh milk, some crumpets, a choice of jams, cereal, and even a packet of my favourite cookies [not so fortunate for my thighs!]

Gertie and Winnie were made to feel just as welcome with a basket brimming with goodies including treats, towels, poo bags, and food and water bowls. There’s even a handy hose outside, for rinsing off muddy paws after a countryside stomp.

All the mod-cons

A Smart TV gives you access to all your favourite binge-worthy series and offers the perfect excuse to linger a little longer on the incredibly comfy bed [so comfy, in fact, that I’ve since ordered the mattress for home!]. The kitchenette is impressively well-equipped, and features a double hob and microwave oven – ideal for rustling up a tasty breakfast or a cosy evening meal. Everywhere you turn, the attention to detail is flawless, with everything spotlessly clean and well-cared for. And yes, there’s WiFi too – just in case you can’t resist sharing a smug holiday snap or two on ‘The Gram!’

To complement the immaculate living space, the shepherd’s hut also boasts a beautifully presented shower room – stylish, and surprisingly spacious. There’s plenty of under-sink storage too, which is ideal if, like me, you travel with enough lotions, potions, and miracle serums to supply a small apothecary!

Thoughtful touches like bathrobes and slippers are also provided – perfect for when you’re dipping in and out of the hot tub. Or, in my case, for impromptu late-night trips to the lawn, thanks to Winifred’s questionable bladder control!

Hanging out in the hot-tub

Step outside and you’ll find a lovely private seating area – ideal for morning coffees and evening stargazing. I happily lost track of time watching Bryn, Zeus, Toffee and Fudge the resident ponies, as they pottered about their field, chasing each other one minute and lazing in the sunshine the next. [It was also a great training opportunity for the girls – who being terriers – are rather partial to a chase!]

The only sound disturbing the blissful silence is the low purr of the tractor as it tootles up and down the lane, or the plaintive meow of the neighbouring peacock! This rather chatty fella has a lot to say, and took it upon himself to be our personal alarm clock each morning – far more classy than your average rooster, it has to be said!

As the sun begins to set, there’s no better way to unwind than in the wood-fired hot tub – the undeniable highlight of the outdoor space. With logs and kindling all supplied, you can wash your cares away, and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside whilst supping on your favourite tipple.

True to form, I somehow managed to forget to pack any swimwear. And while the thought of a cheeky skinny dip did cross my mind, I decided against subjecting the ponies to that kind of trauma! It simply means I’ll have to come back—purely for hot tub research purposes, of course…

Dog-Friendly Days Out in Somerset

When it comes to dog-friendly days out in this glorious part of the world, you are quite literally spoilt for choice. Whether your pup prefers a gentle sniffari through manicured gardens (like Gertie!) or a full-on romp across open fields, Somerset has something to satisfy every paw-sonality!

As a budding member of the National Trust [I’m still waiting on the dogs’ official membership cards!], the dogs and I spent our first day soaking up the history and beauty of two nearby gems – Barrington Court and Montacute House.

Both properties welcome dogs on leads in most outdoor areas. At Barrington Court, dogs are allowed to explore the extensive grounds and most of the gardens – the only exception being the walled kitchen garden, which is off-limits to canine visitors. That said, it doesn’t take away from the experience – there’s still lots to explore and plenty of posing opportunities to be had! [Much to Gertie’s delight!]

Montacute House is equally beautiful, with vast parkland walks perfect for a good stretch of the legs. However, it’s worth noting that, as with most National Trust properties, dogs aren’t allowed inside the houses themselves. And somewhat frustratingly, they’re also not permitted inside the café at Montacute – which, as a solo visitor, can make grabbing a bite to eat somewhat of a challenge! As it was, they lost out on my hard-earned cash!

Glastonbury

I couldn’t come to Somerset and not visit one of my favourite West Country towns. About twenty minutes from Henley is the town of Glastonbury – a place so wonderfully quirky and steeped in myth, it’s impossible not to fall under its spell. With stories of King Arthur, the Holy Grail, ley lines and ancient goddesses floating through its streets, there’s a magical air that seems to linger around every corner.

The iconic Glastonbury Tor is within easy walking distance of the town centre and makes for an exhilarating (if slightly leg-burning) climb. I met up with an old friend for the day and, despite her well-documented dislike of uphill hikes and exposed heights, managed to coax her all the way to the top! The views are absolutely worth it – a sweeping panorama of the Somerset Levels, with rolling hills unfolding as far as the eye can see.

Glastonbury Tor

There’s almost always someone at the summit playing a flute, strumming a guitar, or singing softly into the breeze, adding to the otherworldly atmosphere that makes Glastonbury feel like nowhere else on earth.

Back down in the town, we whiled away a few hours marvelling over the quaint selection of shops smelling of sandalwood, overflowing with crystals, and selling all manner of mythical treasures. The friendly, laid-back vibe of Glastonbury is unmistakable – though whether that’s down to the town’s spiritual energy or the occasional waft of cannabis drifting through the air is anyone’s guess!

There’s no shortage of places to eat and drink either – from hearty vegan cafés and rustic pubs to cosy tea rooms tucked away down side streets. We plumped for a pub lunch at the historic George and Pilgrims Inn – said to be one of the oldest purpose-built inns in the country – and found a shady spot in their beer garden to enjoy a very tasty sandwich.

A Fond Farewell

We’d been blessed with beautiful sunshine throughout our stay, making it even harder to bid farewell to our cosy accommodation and idyllic setting. Determined to squeeze every last second out of our adventure, we decided to stop off at Tyntesfield on the way home and make the most of our National Trust membership once more.

Set in stunning parkland just outside Bristol, Tyntesfield was the perfect halfway point to stretch our legs – and to delay our return to reality for just a little longer!

Dog Friendly Glamping Holidays Somerset

We’d had the most amazing few days at Collie Shepherd’s Huts. From the peaceful surroundings and thoughtful touches, to the warm welcome and dog-friendly luxury it was the perfect countryside escape. The girls were in their element, I came away feeling genuinely rested, and we’re already planning our return visit – next time with Mr T in tow so he can experience the magic for himself.

If you’re looking for a peaceful break where dogs are not just welcomed but truly embraced, I honestly couldn’t recommend it more. Just don’t forget your swimwear…!
